The defenses within the Grand Trine are a necessary expression for the developmental growth of the ego, though necessarily and inherently against relationships. The Water Grand Trine can be expressed as a closed circuit of emotional self sufficiency, not wanting to get emotionally injured again, “I don’t need your love” the Air Grand Trine can be expressed as a closed circuit of social and intellectual self sufficiency, with the fear of not being approved of or appreciated, “Say what you like, it won’t bother me” the Fire Grand Trine can be expressed as a defense or fear against being neglected or ignored, “You can’t tell me anything I don’t already know” the Earth Grand Trine can be expressed as a closed circuit of self reliance or not wanting assistance from others, “I don’t need your help.” Traditionally the Elements have been classified and divided into two groups Fire and Air as active and self expressive, and Water and Earth as passive and receptive. The four Elements of which I am speaking are Earth (in touch with the physical senses), Fire (excitable and enthusiastic), Air (intellect, communication), and Water (feelings and emotions). The Grand Trine can be found within any of the four elements, or combinations (also the Modalities). Think of the Grand Trine as an enclosed circuit of self sufficiency, expressed in a defensive manner depending upon the quality in which it is found. Then, there is what Astrologers call a Grand Trine, a combination of at least three or more planets connected by three consecutive 120° aspects, think the shape of triangle, you know, the kind that a cattle drive cook would ring to call all his cowboy buddies to breakfast or dinner on the dusty plains of Texas or the symphony whose musical member sits in the back row waiting for his/her one lone opportunity to contribute. This could be due to the environment they were born into or just laziness an innate quality for the Trine. More often than not, the Trine aspect is one that is never fully utilized by the person who has one. This view can be likened to the gifted artist or musician who has tremendous ability to express his/her genius, and either develops and uses this ability, or lets it fall by the wayside to waste. This perspective can be one of both a positive, or a negative one in and of its nature. There are many people, Astrologers included, who feel that the Trine aspect is a positive and well meaning one. For those of you in San Luis Obispo who follow Astrology and have a general understanding of it, you have probably heard of the 120° mathematical measurement known as the Trine aspect.
